Wat Pho or Reclining Buddha Temple

Wat Phra Chetuphon, commonly known as Wat Pho, belongs to the first-class category of royal monasteries. It lies south of the Grand Palace and covers an area of over 20 acres.

Wat Pho founded in the 16th century, is the oldest and biggest temple with the largest number of pagodas (95 in all of various sizes) in the city and four great pagodas each 41 meters high.

Wat Pho was the first open university of Thailand which used to offer courses in several branches of knowledge like literature, archaeology, astrology and medicine. It is well known for its huge Reclining Buddha, 46m long and 15m high which make it the largest reclining Buddha in Bangkok and the second largest in the country. The most interesting feature is the mother-of- pearl inlaid design on the soles of the feet showing the 108 auspicious signs arrayed in 67 small squares around the ‘chakra’, or a disc, at the center.
