Grand Palace & Emerald Buddha Temple

The construction of the Grand Palace built in 1782 during the reign of King Rama I when Bangkok became the Capital of the Kingdom of Siam to become a royal residence. The Grand Palace was the residence of the King and the seat of government until 1925 and is now used for ceremonial purposes only. The Palace site boasts many ornately decorated buildings, architectural symbol and unique statues and has been featured in movies such as Anna and the King of Siam and “The King and I”. 

The Royal Chapel is also called the Temple of The Emerald Buddha, the residence of Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist sculpture. This statue is made from one gigantic piece of green Jade situated amid gold-gilded sculptures and ornaments, and fresco paintings of the main ordination hall. Here, some of Thailand’s most significant Buddhist ceremonies are performed by the King. The famous statue is a deeply venerated image in Thailand.

Compound of Emerald Buddha Temple

This is the most famous place that is the most for all tourists. The Grand Palace consists of several buildings with different styles of architectures and decorated into smallest details. Chakri Maha Prasat, the 3-storey building is the mixture of Thai and Western architecture. The top part is pure Thai with tapering spires and tiered sloping roofs, and the lower part, designed by a British architect are in the imperial Victorian style. Borompiman Hall. The French-inspired structure was built by King Rama V for Crown Prince Vajiravudh as his residence. It is now used to accommodate visiting foreign heads of state.

The Emerald Buddha Temple is renowned as the most beautiful and important Buddha temple in Thailand. It houses the Emerald Buddha, the most highly revered Buddha image carved from a single block of fine jade.

Scattered in the temple grounds are numerous interesting sculptures of artistic value including the fanciful animals in mythology, the fierce-looking giants standing guard at the gates, the six pairs of the Cambodian-style bronze lions and the stone figures from China.

On the inside walls of the temple’s compound, there are extensive mural paintings depicting scenes from the famous epic “Ramayana”. It is the longest wall painting in the world as well as one of the Unseen Bangkok. A distinctive characteristic of the temple is that there are no monks living in it like other temples

The hermit figures

The figure of Chivok Komaraphat Hermit. This figure was cast in bronze by the ordered of King Rama III for commemorating to Thai traditional medicine. In front of him is placed a mortar and a grinding stone, which in the old days were used by the believers to grind the medicine for greater efficacy.

The Demon Guardians

There are six pairs of them, standing at the gate of the gallery. Most of them are facing to the chapel of the Emerald Buddha. It’s meaning that they are guarding The Emerald Buddha from all evil spirits. These demon statues were built in the reign of King Rama III. Each one is an important character in Rammakian story, the most important literature in the reign of King Rama I.

The gallery and Ramakien story

The gallery which surrounding every building in the temple, there are mural paintings which depict the story of the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian Ramayana epic. This story is the battle between Tosakanth who is the King of demons and King Rama (human being). The painting consists of 178 sections.

Phra Mondop

This Building is the Buddhist library, called Phra Mondop in Thai. It was built during the reign of King Rama I in 1789 for containing a large beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay book cabinet to house the Buddhist scripture.

At the stair entrance you will see beautiful pair of demon guardian again protecting from evil bad spirit, throughout the wall decoration with most beautiful the figure of deva pattern in gold, white and green color mirror

Model of Angor Wat

Here, you shouldn’t miss when visiting The Emerald Buddha Temple. A model of Angor Wat, the Khmer temple in Cambodia. It is an impressive example of Khmer architecture of the 12th century. The King Rama IV has built this model for Thai people who can’t go to see in Cambodia so can come and see here, in that time Cambodia is under Thailand. This model is beautiful than the real one that it is very large, about 1,000 metres length and 800 metres width and spent very long time for construction nearly 60 years and using 2 million labors.

Phra Bussabok

Around the library are four small pillars surrounded by elephant statues. In gilt pavilions on the pillars contain the royal emblems of all the Kings in Bangkok period. At the base of the gilt pavilion, you can see bronze models of auspicious white elephants. They are different in number due to the number of white elephants in each reign.

Prasat Phra Dhepbidorn

It was constructed by King Rama IV in 1856 at first the King wanted to transfer the Emerald Buddha from the main chapel to enshrine inside this building. But after this building was finished it was found to be too small to perform any ceremony. At present, nine statues of the previous Kings are enshrined inside this building and open to the public on April 6 and May 5 every year

Phra Asadha Maha Chedi

The eight prang or towers are standing on the east of the temple were constructed during the reign of King Rama I. A prang has the same function as a chedi which is a monument one worthy of veneration. They are different colours each one is dedicated to a certain Buddhist concept.

Phra Ubosot

Phra Ubosot or The Chapel of the Emerald Buddha is the most important building in the temple was built by King Rama I in 1782. It’s the ordination hall in real Thai style architecture, the style of Ayudhaya period, used as an ordination place for Buddhist monks because it is surrounded by double sacred boundary stones, which mean royal chapel place in small pavilions. The outside walls of the building are decorated with gilt and color glass mosaics.

The Emerald Buddha

The Emerald Buddha is the Buddha image which was carved from a block of jasper. The image itself measure 66 cm. high include the base and 48.3 cm. wide, in the attitude of meditation. Judging from the image’s style, the Emerald Buddha is of northern Thai workmanship and was probably made in 15th century, and regarded as the most important Buddha image in Thailand. There are three different costumes of the Emerald Buddha, one of season, they are summer, rainy season and winter. The ceremony of changing the costume of the Emerald Buddha takes place three times a year, at the beginning of new season by the King.

Phra Maha Montian groupม, Amarindra Winitchai Hall

Phra Thinang Amarindra Winitchai Mahai Suraya Phiman or Amarindra Winitchai Hall is the first part of Phra Maha Montian Group. This hall was built by King Rama I in 1782. It was the formal audience hall where the King met his officers of state and foreign Ambassadors. The two British ambassadors, John Crawford during the reign of King Rama II, and Sir John Bowring during the reign of King Rama IV, were both received to present their credentials here. Today this hall is used for many state occasions such as coronation ceremony, the King’s birthday ceremony and other special occasions.

The inner section of The Grand Palace used to be the residence for our King from King Rama 1-6, For King Rama 7 stayed at Hua Hin and King Rama 8 & 9 stay at by occasional. But we have traditional that King has to stay at least 1 night before taking the throne

This section is only for King, wife and women only, for child under 13 years old.

Chakri Maha Prasat Hall

What you see is the Chakri Mahaprasat Throne Hall built by King Rama V in 1876, took 6 years for construction. In the old day when King Rama V back from state visit at Pattawia, in Indonesia which has lots of holland architecture, he came back to Bangkok he desired to built same as western to present that we are civilized country in order to avoid colony problem.

The original design by the British architect, Mr.John Clunish in Victorian Style and mix with Thai architecture at the top for the purpose of showing that Thailand is an independent country.

To visit inside require official and special permission as it is important throne hall, many important and valuable.

Dusit Maha Prasat Hall

Now we come to the Dusit Maha Prasat Hall which was built by our King Rama I since 1782 in wood but unfortunately it burnt down in 2 years later so this building as you are seeing now is the new building. Look over higher, appeared on the gable of Visanuh on Garuda that means was built this built by the King and we also believe that king is avatar from part of Visanuh so this symbol is very meaningful in Thailand. And you will see the balcony there, it is important as our King appear and receive state tribute or gift from tributary state in that period of time, over 200 years ago.

The principal function of this hall for lying-in-state of Kings, Queen and members of the royal family and also used for the annual Consecration Day Ceremony.
